I spoke too soon

26 02 2007

Last night I paid the price for bragging about Natalya sleeping through (before last night she had slept through for 6 of the last 7 nights. Last night she woke me up every two hours of so. It was the first night since she was born that she hasn’t given me at least one three and a half hour block of sleep if not more or longer.

Today she has been feeding so much I feel as if my nipples are about to fall off. She has taken to shaking her head or pulling it backwards with my nipple in her mouth–ouch! Any ideas on how to stop a nine week old from shaking her head with my nipple in her mouth?

It sounds like she has really woken up! I had the same experience with Charley when she was first born - for the first couple of weeks she spent most of the time in baby sleep land, then all of a sudden, getting her to sleep was impossible. For weeks on end, she would just scream from 8pm to midnight like clockwork - it was really draining.

I understand how you feel - if you can manage to feel while trying to hold your eyes open! Just remember this - this soon shall pass and you will have a whole new problem to tackle. We are going on two and half years here and I am still completely puzzled. :)

With the shaking the head thing, I have no idea unfortunately - I had problems trying to get Charley to suck!! I wonder if maybe you could give a breastfeeding support line a call about it? I am sure there would be one?

Maybe she’s going through a growth spurt?

I know that whenever my kids did somthing while feeding - biting, whatever - I’d take them off, say no firmly, put them on the floor and walk away (for all of 2 minutes), and not let them feed again for a bit. If they were just playing & at the end of a feed, it wouldn’t matter, but if it was during a feed, they soon got the message not to do it.

Good luck.
